Saying Goodbye to the Summer of the Hummingbirds

Updated: Oct 26, 2019

The summer of 2019 has been such an incredible summer for me. The loving Universe has brought me on a journey to live in Sedona, Arizona. It was a beautiful summer, and now it has come to an end. Today is the Autumnal Equinox, and the Universe is getting us all ready for the new season. But letting change in is not always easy, especially when you had so much fun in the last season.

Mother Nature brought its message to me several days ago. I was forced to say goodbye to the summer of the hummingbirds.

This summer I really enjoyed the private patio that I have outside my apartment. On the patio there is a hummingbird water feeder. When I first arrived to my apartment in Sedona, I didn't know what it was. I am a New York City girl, and had never seen one of these things. I cleaned it and put fresh water from the sink, because I could see that my neighbor had one with water on her terrace. But hummingbirds were going to her water feeder but not mine. I wanted so badly to enjoy the hummingbirds on my patio.

It took me several days to discover that I needed to add sugar to the water in my feeder for the hummingbirds to drink it. And once I added the sugar, then the fun began. I was all excited to see the sweet little hummingbirds up close and see them sipping water and flying around.

Each morning the hummingbirds would arrive at dawn around 5:00 am to drink and play. I would try to be awake each morning to greet them. I started to see that the hummingbirds are actually quite territorial and not as sweet as I thought. There was this one humming bird who actually took over the feeder and would not allow the other birds to drink. He would sip from the feeder and then hide in a nearby tree. When another bird approached the water feeder, he would swoop in for the attack, chirp loudly, and then chase the other bird away. Sometimes he would engage in battle with the birds using their beaks like swords. It was an amazing aerial battle to watch.

I affectionately named the hummingbird who took over the feeder Red. I looked forward to seeing Red everyday, and lovingly refreshed the sugar water for him. He would arrive to the patio at 5 am and stay till 11 am, and then return in the evening around 5 pm and stay till sundown. My son and I enjoyed seeing Red the hummingbird everyday, and we would whistle to him. Red would whistle back. It was so much to fun like having a pet free in nature. So, I watched the aerial battles and the sweet bird sipping through July, August and early September.

About five days before the Autumnal Equinox, the hummingbirds were nowhere to be found. Just complete quiet. I kept looking out on the patio to check and see if the hummingbirds were around. But nothing. I kept checking to see if Red had arrived to drink and protect his territory.

To my surprise, I felt really sad. I felt like crying when I realized after several days that Red wasn't coming back. The season was over.

Mother Nature has a profound way of talking to us. It is time to change. It is time to let go. Trust that the divine Universe has a new path for you full of love and light. You will feel happiness again. But it will be in a new way with new people. This change is for your good. Keep going. It is okay to say goodbye to the summer of the hummingbirds.

Surprisingly, today on the Autumn Equinox there are a couple of new hummingbirds flying around, but Red is nowhere to be found.

It is ok. I accept the change. Will you accept the change too?
